Having good emotional health involves being in awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours, expressing them safely and appropriately and having good, healthy coping resources to deal with stressors and other life challenges, all of which are inevitable. It requires establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries, being gentle and self-compassionate and having healthy relationships.

How Do Emotions Affect Wellness?

In more recent times, evidence provided by mind-body medicine has shown that psychological factors play a role in illness and mind-body techniques can be effective in their treatment. Clinical trials have also indicated that mind-body therapies can be helpful in improving psychological wellness and may help to relieve symptoms of disease.

The mind-body connection results in the body responding to the way we think, feel and act. If you are anxious, depressed or upset in any way, your body tells you that something is wrong. For example, if there are relationship problems or a loved one dies, you may find it difficult to sleep properly and may develop insomnia.

How Can Emotional Health Be Improved?

There are ways that emotional health can be improved, including daily self-care and self-compassion practices, learning how to safely and appropriately express your feelings, how to manage stress, how to develop resilience, how to establish and maintain boundaries and how to deal with difficult relationships.
