Dear Bravehearts,
I hope you are coping as well as possible.
There are times in healing when it feels as though nothing is changing.
Days may pass slowly. Symptoms may continue. Progress may feel too small to notice, and hope can become tired.
But the body has not forgotten what it is trying to do.
The human body is extraordinarily loyal. It is constantly working to maintain balance, repair disruption and move towards homeostatic equilibrium. Even when we cannot feel that process happening, the work continues quietly beneath the surface.
Healing is rarely linear. There may be flares, fluctuations and periods when it seems as though you are standing still. Yet the body remains responsive, adaptive and resilient.
It keeps adjusting and compensating, trying to restore what has been disturbed. This is why I encourage you to keep going.
You do not have to feel hopeful every moment. You do not have to be strong every day. You can feel discouraged, exhausted, frightened or sad and still continue healing.
Sometimes perseverance simply means getting through this day, one breath, one moment, one hour, one day at a time.
Remiind yourself that your present state is only one moment in a much longer biological process.
Your body is still with you, still working, still adapting, reaching towards balance. It will always remember how to mend.
So when healing feels painfully slow, try to remember the quiet intelligence of the body and its extraordinary capacity for restoration.
Keep going. One day at a time. Your body has not given up on you.
With much compassion,
