Dearest Braveheart,
Today, I want to invite you to think for a moment about the ordinary pleasures you look forward to enjoying again. A conversation that holds your interest. A favourite song that makes you smile. A meal enjoyed in good company. Becoming so absorbed in something you love that, for a while, your attention rests entirely on what you are doing.
During my twenty years of supporting people through withdrawal, I have heard so many lovely accounts of these moments returning. Someone tells me they laughed wholeheartedly at something funny. Another shares that they spent an afternoon gardening, reading, or catching up with a friend. Knowing what it took for them to reach that point, I understand how precious these experiences are.
Sometimes, people recognise the significance afterwards: “I realised I had enjoyed myself.” An ordinary afternoon becomes something they once longed for, and a reason to feel hopeful about what lies ahead.
When your days require so much endurance, your wishes for the future can become beautifully simple. You want to feel comfortable in your own company, connect with the people you care about, and have the freedom to follow your interests. These hopes matter. There is so much life held within them.
As you move through today, offer yourself whatever kindness and support you can. Let a favourite memory remind you of something you cherish. If it feels comforting, think of one small pleasure you look forward to experiencing again.
I hold so many stories of people finding their way back into the everyday richness of living. It is a joy to hear their news, and it is one of the reasons I continue to share hope with you.
May the thought of those ordinary, precious moments bring you a little encouragement today.
With much compassion,
